The U.S. Navy — founded on the values of fairness, courage and equality — is looking to incorporate some new principles into its day-to-day shipyard operations: efficiency and cost effectiveness.
In an Oct. 7 news release, it was announced that a new paperless online document storage system would be implemented for the U.S. Department of the Navy’s shipyard maintenance operations.
The new maintenance system will utilize mobile devices like tablets to help increase efficiency and cost savings. Maintenance workers and their supervisors will be equipped with tablets to access electronic work packages. The packages include tools to plan and schedule, fill out forms and manage activities. It also will ensure that all information is timely and up-to-date. It will allow for real-time collaboration between workers and supervisors. The new online document and storage system will be called electronic Technical Work Documents (eTWD).
The whole system is a large-scale effort — a one-year contract with a $16.3 million ceiling — to eliminate paper documents and correspondence. It will replace paper-based work instructions, technical drawings, control forms and reference materials. As a result, efficiency will be improved through more streamlined processes.
“Navy eTWD is a critical initiative for the Department of the Navy’s Ship Depot Maintenance Program,” said Vince Vlasho, a member of the company providing the new paperless online document storage system, in the press release.“It will dramatically improve the way maintenance is performed in the shipyards, and in turn, improve fleet readiness, making critical budget dollars available for other force structure and readiness initiatives. We are proud to have been selected by the Naval Sea Systems Command to work together and deliver this important capability.”
The system is set to be installed in the U.S. Navy’s four public shipyards in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Puget Sound and Pearl Harbor.
